Legislative Update

The 2023 legislative session started in January with approximately 2,000 proposed bills being submitted by legislators. The various legislative committees have reduced the number of bills that will be seriously considered this session. Public hearings on these proposals are the immediate focus of the legislature. Once the bills are voted out of a committee they will be either sent to the House or the Senate for consideration. Many times they are referred to other committees for review before finally being voted on by both chambers.

Physician Assisted Suicide to be considered by Public Health Committee - Again

Once again the Public Health Committee has decided to considered legalizing physician assisted suicide (PAS) in Connecticut. This will be the 10th time PAS legislation has been considered  since 2013. We and many medical, disability, hospice and fellow religious organizations are opposed to this bill. The advocates of this legislation call it Aid in Dying to deflect the discussion from the fact that the patient must self-administer the deadly cocktail of drugs. The actual language of the bill has not yet been published, but is expected to be very similar to previous years. Your voices, phone calls and emails are needed now to stop this atrocity from becoming law.

HB 6618 requires the State of Connecticut, through the Department of Social Services, to use Connecticut taxpayer funds to pay for 100% of the cost of abortion services for out-of-state low- income women. Women are eligible for this coverage if they meet certain income requirements and come from a state that has laws restricting abortion services.

Connecticut taxpayers must not be forced to pay for a service that is the taking of an innocent human life.
