40 Days For Life begins in the Archdiocese of Hartford - Played a role in Hartford abortion clinic relocation to Bloomfield. What role is Hartford Healthcare playing in the operation of this abortion clinic?

The Archdiocese of Hartford's 40 Days For Life Campaign has held its annual prayer vigil outside of the Hartford GYN Center, an abortion clinic, for well over a decade. Additionally, peaceful prayer vigils have been held throughout the years by other pro-life groups. This year the 40 Days For Life Campaign will be moving to a new location, outside the Planned Parenthood in West Hartford, because the Hartford GYN Center in Hartford has finally closed. Unfortunately, the Hartford GYN Center has quietly been planning to eventually reopen in the neighboring town of Bloomfield...

Unfortunately, the Hartford GYN Center has quietly been planning to eventually reopen in the neighboring town of Bloomfield in a medical complex at 701 Cottage Grove Road, Suite C110. The Hartford GYN Center has long been known as the place to go in Hartford if you wanted an abortion. Quick and easy. In fact, on its website it proudly announces that it "has been specializing in abortion care since 1978".

The move will place the "abortion mill" in a medical complex far removed from the street and in a location making it more difficult for pray vigils, such as the 40 Days of Life Campaign, to be held. Planning is expected to be undertaken within the Connecticut pro-life community to evaluate how peaceful pray vigils can be held at this new location.

The Hartford GYN Center makes its money off of aborting unborn children. It claims to give women, including young teen girls, options counseling when confronted with an unplanned pregnancy. How unbias and truthful can that counseling be when your financial bottom line depends on the number of abortions performed. Providing birth control pills and STD testing, several of the other minor services they claim to offer, do not generate enough funds to keep the doors open.

The Hartford Healthcare Connection

It has also come to the attention of the Connecticut Catholic Public Affairs Conference that medical providers with a relationship to Hartford Healthcare are connected to the abortion clinic. We were very surprised to see the Hartford GYN Center listed as a practice on the Hartford Healthcare website. The Hartford Healthcare website also shows three medical providers with a relationship to the Hartford GYN Center; Rebecca Hathaway Allen, MDMari J. Bentley, MD and Shel Swanson, CNM. We are well aware that Hartford Healthcare does provide abortion services, but for such a highly respected medical institution to be at all associated with a facility that fits the description of an "abortion mill" is extremely surprising and disappointing. Even if that relationship is not financial in nature.

New Marijuana Law Runs into First Challenge To Provision Designed to Protect Youth

Billboards on Highway

The new law legalizing recreational marijuana in our state established various advertising provisions to protect our youth from sale solicitations. One of the provisions concerned the using of billboards to promote marijuana dispensaries. Prior to the law passing, billboard signs were advertising Massachusetts dispensaries where Connecticut residents could go to purchase marijuana. The billboard companies received a notice from the Department of Consumer Protection that as of July 1st the billboards had to come down because they now were in conflict with state law. The billboards have not come down and in fact some continue to be constructed, such as a new one in Bridgeport. The reason is that the largest billboard advertiser in the state is fighting back.

Fortunately. the Attorney General and the Department of Consumer Protection have so far stood strong on the issue. Hopefully they will continue to do so.  If not, this issue may have to be revisited during the next legislative session.

Our Responsibility to Our Common Home -

Whether you believe in climate change or not.

What is our responsibility as Christians to our environment? Whether one agrees or disagrees with what they hear about the threat of climate change, we still all have responsibilities as keepers of God's creation. In May of 2015, Pope Francis released his encyclical on the environment Laudato Si' (On Care For Our Common Home), which explained our responsibilities as Christians to the environment and the world God created.

As the issue of climate change has dominated the news this past year we thought it would be good to review Pope Francis' words. We do not have to agree with all the proclamations about climate change we read in the press, but we do have a responsibility to protect our environment.
