In January of this year a Congressional Committee examining the potential of abuse of power by the FBI was informed by a whistleblower that there was a movement within the FBI to begin infiltrating and spying on various Catholic churches and organizations. A redacted memo was eventually turned over to the Committee proving that what the whistleblower was saying was true.
The Director of the FBI eventually testified on the memo and informed the committee that it was only related to the Richmond field office. The committee pushed and last week finally received an unredacted version of the memo. The memo reveled that it was not just the Richmond field office that was involved in the planning. The Los Angeles and Portland field offices were also participating in the planning. The Director of the FBI mislead the committee and the public.
The story was not significantly covered by the mainstream media, leaving many people unaware of the threat to freedom of religion and association within the FBI aimed at individual Catholics and their parishes and organizations.
We encourage you to read the stories below and listen to the comments by the Conference's Executive Director.
